Investigating the Relationship Between Right-Wing Authoritarianism, Religiosity, Sexism, and Homophobia: A Review

Abstract

This research explores the complex connections between right-wing authoritarianism, religious beliefs, sexism, and perspectives on homosexuality, with the goal of understanding how these elements not only coexist but also interact within society. Utilizing a mixed-methods framework that combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews, we investigate how authoritarian views may reinforce traditional religious ideals, impacting attitudes toward gender roles and sexual orientation. By analyzing data across various demographic groups, this study aims to reveal trends that demonstrate how authoritarian mindsets contribute to sexism and unfavorable attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals. Our results show that higher levels of right-wing authoritarianism are linked to greater religiosity and related sexist views, which in turn lead to more negative opinions about homosexuality. This research adds to the ongoing conversation surrounding social conservatism and its psychological foundations, offering valuable perspectives for policymakers and educators focused on promoting inclusivity in today’s divided society. Ultimately, this paper emphasizes the need for a greater understanding of how interconnected belief systems can sustain discrimination and impede social advancement, highlighting the importance of addressing these relationships in the pursuit of equality and social harmony.
