Perceived Parenting Style, Depression and Self-Esteem among Adolescents

Parenting style plays a crucial role in shaping adolescents psychological well-being and their self-esteem. This study examines the relationship between perceived parenting style, depression and self-esteem among adolescents. The research aims to explore how different parenting style that is – authoritative, authoritarian and permissive parenting style, impacts adolescents mental health and their self-perspective. Using a quantitative and qualitative survey, where the data was collected from the sample of adolescents age group between 14-19 years (Mean age = 15.13 & S.D. = 1.23), using standardized scale of The Perceived Parenting Style Scale (PPSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES). The finding indicates a significant negative correlation between perceived parenting style and both in depression and self-esteem. For qualitative survey the data was collected through interviewing 15 adolescents. The study emphasizes that there is a need for family based interventions to promote positive parenting practices and also enhance adolescents’ mental well-being and self-esteem.Published
